Flash G. and Tenacious D

I had an itch to watch 1980's Flash Gordon this weekend for the first time in years. Now, normally this space is devoted to fisticuffs on Friday nights... but this is too awesome not to share.

In the flick, Flash Gordon's background is that he's the star quarterback for the New York Jets. Through a series of very convenient events, Flash winds up on the planet Mongo to save Earth with the aid of a travel agent and scientist. Almost immediately after arriving in the court of Ming the Merciless, emperor of Mongo, Flash gets into a ridiculous football-themed fight. You have to admire Flash though -- he has the stones to both challenge the emperor and wear a T-shirt bearing his own name (sans airbrushing).

You know who else is a Flash Gordon fan? The boys in Tenacious D. And really, who hasn't gone around singing Queen's famous theme song?

Tenacious D - Flash's Theme [Queen cover; live 10-21-2001]

Queen composed and performed the entire soundtrack to the film, with all but two tracks being instrumentals.

Does anybody know if the 2007 Flash Gordon TV series was any good? I see it ran 22 episodes before cancellation, but I never watched it.

The new Flash Gordon series was painful. I mean Star Trek 3 painful. I mean the film adaptation of The Punisher painful. Spider-Man: The New Animated Series painful. That painful. Now that's pain. Stay away from thew new Flash at all costs.

Best,
Earthling Killed By Ming

YIKES. Point taken.

I'd ask which version of The Punisher you mean (Dolph Lundgren or Thomas Jane) but it doesn't really matter.

Oh YES. Flash Gordon is the awesome. How can you go wrong with a soundtrack by Queen? I caught this flick at a cult movie night and fell in love. I mean bought the t-shirt in love. I mean waited months and months for them to re-print the DVD so I could buy it in love. I mean collect all the songs that even reference Flash Gordon in love (if you're into hip-hop check out the track by Talib Kweli). I had no idea Tenacious D was this amazing though. Thanks for posting.
