Jack Kirby's Captain America remix

These days, artists and illustrators like Dean Trippe, Ming Doyle, Daniel Krall, Joe Quinones, and Joel Carroll regularly contribute revamped superhero designs to Project Rooftop. Tonight I stumbled onto something related I had completely forgotten about. One of their predecessors in the remix field was none other than Jack "The King" Kirby, who apparently redesigned the costume of one Captain America (whom Kirby co-created with Joe Simon in 1941) for some unknown purpose. From Captain America Collector's Preview #1 (March 1995), with thanks to comics historian Greg Theakston:

Given that nobody seems to know what prompted the art above or when it was created, I suppose we may never find out. Personally, I think it looks a little too close to MLJ/Archie Comics hero The Shield for comfort. Still, cool to see what might have been.

Yeesh! Looks like something the original American Gladiators would have worn.

Yes! Cap also went by Nomad for a time, which is awfully close to Turbo. Hmm. Maybe when the superhero biz got slow Cap could moonlight on game shows.
