Madeline 2-3-2007 @ 40 Watt Club, Athens

Saturday night I ventured down the road to Athens for a long-anticipated night of music. After catching sets from Russian Spy Camera and How I Became the Bomb at Caledonia Lounge (more on that later -- Sloan and I both taped), I scrambled over to the 40 Watt Club to see Athens-based songstress Madeline at her CD release party (The Slow Bang is now available from Orange Twin). Boy, am I glad I did. It was my first time seeing her, and it was more than I could have expected.

Madeline played her set as part of an eight-piece band including an upright bass, organ, and horn section (including Laura Carter of Elf Power, who also played accordion and woodwinds). The large band filled out the sound of her familiar songs, and the large and enthusiastic crowd at the 40 Watt added spark to the event. This was one of those occasions when I left the venue incredibly glad that somebody was there to capture the moment. I've uploaded the recording for posterity at the Live Music Archive, and you can check it out here.

As noted, Sloan and I both taped at Caledonia. I will probably defer to his recordings given his better equipment, and he also managed to record Casper & The Cookies (I missed most of their set while over at the 40 Watt). Mike from Deadly Designs was also in the house taking great pictures as usual. It was, in short, a heck of a night in Athens.
