Prince to perform Super Bowl halftime show, Feb. 4

I'm open! I'm open!

So, what sort of music would one normally associate with the National Football League? Surely something masculine, tough, blue collar, and gritty. After all, Hank Williams, Jr., has long been associated with the league's Monday Night offerings. The Super Bowl half-time show recently has featured performers like the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, and U2. Even the year they opted for Janet Jackson the act resulted in a legendary wardrobe malfunction [Zapruder-style vid]. Well, forget all that. This season's Super Bowl halftime performer has been announced, and his name is.... Prince (and he is funky)! For the full story check out this article at MSNBC.

He's a hair over 5' tall, he wears high heels, and at February's Super Bowl he will see a football for the first time in his 46 years on the planet. I'm completely puzzled, but at least it should be entertaining. This is the guy who sings about smoking them all "with an intellect and a savoir-faire." That won't cut it on the gridiron, O Purple One. Anyway, I 'm looking forward to it. I haven't really heard anything he's done in a decade, but I like Prince.

In the spirit of the game, here's one of my favorite Prince tracks. I spent about a year singing this one at random times for no apparent reason. If my former roommate reads this, he can confirm. It's a fun little song [lyrics]:

Prince - Starfish and Coffee

Much to my delight, Matt Nathanson shares my love for this track and works it into his live show on a regular basis. Here's a cut from his February 25, 2006, show at Mitchell Hall Theatre in Newark, DE, with a little bonus Bee Gees content:

Matt Nathanson - Starfish and Coffee > Stayin' Alive [Bee Gees] > Starfish and Coffee [live 2-25-2006]

Now, because I absolutely can't let this opportunity pass without posting this, here's Prince and the New Power Generation's legendary performance of "Gett Off" from the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards, complete with assless chaps, an introduction by Arsenio Hall, and what sure resembles an on-stage orgy:

Have a sexy Monday!

I would totally have sex with Prince. I imagine I could just lay there and get off from him just staring at me the right way.

Perhaps that sort of skill is why the NFL selected him. They're trying to induce the first ever simultaneous global orgasm.

World peace sure to follow. We'll be out of Iraq by Valentine's Day.
